PROPOSAL

AN URBAN PIG FARM

HISTORY OF PIG FARMING

Wild boars roam freely in the oak forests and shrublands of Europe, Asia and North Africa.

They were first domesticated in China 6000 years ago and were farmed as food.

Nowadays, having pigs as pet is on the rise. They are intelligent, clean animals that are capable of providing therapy.

Traditional farming consisted of large open, but confined areas for the pigs to roam freely. This provides freedom for the pigs to wander and socialise with the others, mimicking it as close to nature.

Due to an increase of demand for pork, over 500 million pigs now live in industrialised systems, known as factory farms. Pigs are kept in intensive confinement and lonliness, resulting in a negative impact on the pigs' sanity and behaviour.

Similar to dogs, most pet pigs live comfortably at homes, on the beds, sofas or mats. Now in my urban pig farm, that's how they will live.

CONCEPT

A self-sustained system where the farm is managed by the community and volunteers.

A system where one element cannot work without the other.

A system where the pigs 'feed themselves' and the garden 'grows itself'.
